About This Project

Virtual DVD Shelf is a PHP/MySQL-based catalog application created by Ryan Rebke.

I created this application to catalog my personal DVD collection and the categories are tailored to my own interests, but the functionality contained within could be adapted to catalog almost anything. The data is searchable, is easily filtered, and incorporates audio and visual media as well as text-based data.

Allow me to describe some of the more interesting features of this web application:

  • Image formatting. The authenticated user may upload a "DVD Artwork" image in JPEG, GIF, or PNG format, which is stored at its original size as a JPEG and then resampled into three different thumbnail sizes. The different thumbnails are created so that the user always sees a clean image rather than one that has been re-sized by the browser. On the "Art Gallery" page (or when viewing an individual entry on the display page), clicking on a thumbnail will allow the user to view that image at its original size using an implementation of Lightbox.

  • Sound clips. The authenticated user may upload up to five sound clips for each DVD entry. Each clip loads and begins playing instantly when its link is clicked on the display page. No new pages, popup windows or plugins (other than Flash player) are required.

  • Easy data filtering. The columns on either side of the main content area contain a dynamically-created menu system that allows the user to filter database entries based on the content of different categories. Each menu contains an exhaustive list of the unique strings of data in its corresponding database field. Additionally, each piece of categorical data on the display page is a clickable link that performs a filter.
